How to compile GARFIELD from scratch on a Debian Sarge system

• Get the sources from http://cern.ch/garfield/files.
• Get help files from /afs/cern.ch/user/r/rjd/Garfield/Files/:
  • ./garfield.rawhelp
  • ./help_input
• Remove "_linux" from file names
• Modify makefile to point to the correct paths for cernlib; use the $(CERNBIN) environment variable
• Substitute AFS variable .@sys/ by Linux in makefile
• Modify the section "help" in makefile to read as follows

  help: garfield.rawhelp
        -rm Linux/garfield.packhelp
        ./Linux/garfield-7 -noinput -noterminal -metafile  < help_input
        rm garfield.metafile
  

• make garfield-7 (uses magboltz 2)
• make garfield-8 (uses magboltz 3)
• make help
• to set up garfield, include the following lines into your bashrc file

  echo "Setting up GARFIELD"
  export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/garfield/executable
  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/afs/e18/sw/cern/shift/lib/
  

• type garfield-7 or garfield-8 to run garfield
